CAMPUS RENEWAL
Franciscan Children’s and Boston Children’s are combining their experience and expertise to create a transformative system of pediatric behavioral health and rehabilitative care. Through advancements in care, research, and teaching, we aim to make a difference in the lives of children and families in Massachusetts, New England, throughout the country and beyond. The campus renewal will include construction of a new state-of-the-art building on the Franciscan campus. The building will feature the latest technology and tools to support cutting-edge treatment and research and private patient rooms to accommodate parental/caregiver engagement and family support.

BENEFITS
Franciscan Children's and Boston Children's have joined together for an exciting new project to improve the lives of children and families. This campus renewal project will:
Improve access to state-of-the-art care for patients across the region by expanding existing mental health and medical rehabilitation services
Add new services and programs to meet rising needs of children and families
Co-locate clinical programming and services in one building for improved care coordination
Expand research and enhance training for the next generation of pediatric leaders
FUTURE Community AMENITIES
Sustainability
Linear art walk including work from Boston artists
Rain garden with publicly accessible pathway to provide respite
Two raised crosswalks on Warren Street to improve pedestrian flow
New Bluebikes station
Energy efficiency and sustainable design, including outdoor safety features, are central to the project. The design focuses on identifying opportunities to reduce the building’s environmental impact while enhancing the health and well-being of staff and patient families.
INTERIOR FEATURES
Patient-centered, family-friendly building design focused on the needs of children and families
Single-occupancy rooms to increase access, enhance privacy and improve the overall patient and family experience
New family and visitor spaces
State-of-the-art technology and equipment, including a rehabilitative therapy pool
Contemporary and convenient collaboration spaces for staff
Clean Energy
Forty-two geothermal wells, drilled to a depth of 800 feet, will use the earth’s constant underground temperature to warm the building in winter and cool it in summer. The wells, installed beneath exterior play spaces, will significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption compared to existing hospitals in Boston and Cambridge.
Healthy Materials
The project will significantly reduce emissions associated with the extraction, manufacture and transport of construction materials.
Material selection prioritizes bio-based and low-plastic interior finishes, avoiding the production of more than 8,000 pounds of plastic—the equivalent weight of two cars.
The high-performing building façade features triple-glazed windows and a continuous air barrier to conserve energy and maintain optimal indoor air quality.
Landscaping
Transform the existing public sidewalk on Warren Street into an expanded “art walk” to improve the public realm, reduce rainwater runoff, and create a more natural environment through enhanced plantings.
Excessive heat will be mitigated through large landscaped areas, an increase in on-site tree count from 58 to more than 300 trees, and a significant expansion of overall landscaped space.
Stormwater Infiltration
An underground infiltration system to collect rainwater, along with a 34,000-square-foot rain garden, will be constructed to absorb stormwater, reduce strain on public drainage infrastructure and lower flood risk on the site.
Safety Measures on Warren Street
Two raised crosswalks with solar-powered flashing signage
Emergency blue phone system throughout the landscaped campus area
Additional lighting to create a safe and engaging nighttime environment
